Brendan started practicing law as a legal clerk in 1966 upon leaving secondary school. He progressed to Legal Executive where he won national prizes recognising his exceptionally high exam scores. Brendan started specialising in family law representing the victims of domestic violence. He was the first solicitor in the country to use an injunction to protect his clients from violence, which led him to pioneering womens refuges.
Brendan worked hard in legal practise and self motivated study and eventually qualified as a solicitor in 1981. In 1982 Brendan founded Brendan Fleming solicitors incorporating HE Wynshenk and was soon solely responsible for a highly successful law firm initially specialising in Family law and Criminal defense law. Brendan achieved national acclaim when he acted probono in two high profile cases in Thailand saving his clients from death penalty with a not guilty verdict and a king's pardon. The demand for Brendan's unique skill in advocacy and his ingenious approach to the law enabled his practise to thrive. Brendan focused a lot of energy on finding "the best young people" to train to practise law the "Brendan Fleming way" and prides himself on having a team of dedicated lawyers, as committed to their client's case as he is to his own clients. Some of his team have been with him for over 30 years.
While highly competent in all areas of family law, Brendan is particularly enthusiastic in ensuring vulnerable clients the excellent representation they need. His belief in the unique natural bond between a child and their biological parents has earned him a reputation in being a solicitor who will really fight the parent's battle against Local Authorities all over the country. Brendan has acted in many reported cases and has been a formidable advocate. He has a strict policy of never representing a Local Authority in care proceedings.
Brendan has developed the company to be one of the most successful in the country in representing parents. Although semi-retired and mostly focusing now on his own children, Brendan continues to head and manage the public law department offering support and guidance to each member whenever needed and is delighted in overseeing their individual successes as well as the continued success of the company.
